My Story
As far back as I can remember I wanted to make things with my hands. As a small child growing up in Nova Scotia, I made fair-weather necklaces with dandelions. This desire to “make” grew with me and led me to the Visual Communication Program at Grant McEwan College where I graduated with honours. In my professional display design career, I used my hands to make props and turn shopping centres into magical Santa villages, event facilities into elegantly decorated special occasions, as well as, contribute to Royal Alberta Museum exhibitions. When it came to feathering my own nest a serendipitous experience with traditional rug hooking led my hands to wool and creating rugs for my home. I was enchanted with the beauty, durability, and sustainable properties of raw wool. My imagination exploded with it’s transformative, expressive potential. The larger world of hand made textiles and fibre art opened in front of me and I dove in. I soon realized my hands felt most connected to my heart and soul when they were creating in this arena.
I now have a full-time fibre art studio in Edmonton, Canada where I use rug hooking, felting, knitting, and crocheting to create textile art, sculpture and furnishings. All of the pieces you see on this website are original, one of a kind works hand-made by me.
I find a lot of value and inspiration in textile traditions and fibre art history but I’m also an explorer and I think of my studio as a fibre laboratory. I strive to push boundaries to enrich both my process and work. I’ve developed my own methods to merge and fuse rug hooking, felting, knitting and crocheting, and in doing so have created a new tactile language to express myself. This new language allows me to move fluently between 2 and 3 dimensions for a richer dialogue. This has taken me on adventures in Canada and the United States where I’ve shared this combination artwork though presentations and workshops.
My journey with fibre art and wool has also kindled a love of writing. Writing has become my conduit for deeper thought which in turn enriches my experiences and provides more fertile ground for my hands and creativity to mine. I have had the honour and pleasure to share some of my thoughts each month as a guest writer for a popular rug hooking website since 2011 on topics like art, design, creativity and life. I have also written articles for Rug Hooking Magazine. ( Sept/Oct 2012, Sept/Oct 2014)
My creations start with a general idea or concept but I develop and build my work very organically allowing each step to inform the next. In some ways my process seeks to reconnect with that little girl and her instinctive creativity where there was no distinction between a flower and a weed only possibilities for a bright button of yellow. My inspirations, skills, artistry and original voice all flow out of my hands to bring my inner world to light and allow my soul to breathe fresh air. It’s my joy and practice to create with my hands everyday.
Thank you for visiting my website. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.
I welcome opportunities and enquiries for commissions, architectural installations or a custom workshop experience.
I have a short biography and c.v. available upon request.
